What Occupies Your Mind?
Recently, I preached a message from Psalm chapter 1. Allow me to remind you of vs. 2:
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; And in his law doth he meditate day and night.
I asked two questions about this verse: 1) Is God’s Word your first love? And 2) What engages your mind? What occupies the attention of your mind?
I must admit that I didn’t finish the week, in regard to those two questions, in what I could call a “strong fashion.” In fact, I must admit that I allowed some “cares of this world” to occupy my mind at times which caused me to be stressed, fretful, and anxious.
I certainly don’t admit that because I am seeking your sympathy nor am I seeking to have a “Woe is me” attitude. I am merely admitting it to show the truth that it is a battle – a constant battle – that I am confident we all struggle with at times.
The real question is whether we continue to allow our minds to be occupied with the cares of this world (or other concerns) or whether we consciously and intentionally yield our thoughts to be occupied with God’s Word?
I recall, on Friday afternoon, getting alone with God in my office and yielding those concerns to the Lord but I also recall bringing to mind Psalm 1:2 and quoting it in my mind as a reminder to allow God’s Word to occupy my attention.
I wish that I could say that it was an immediate and complete victory, but it wasn’t, nor was it a final victory. I’m sure that I will battle this again but I must remember (as we all do) that God’s Word never runs out of power!
